Card 1 โ The Goal
๐ฏ The Goal: Vouchers are a trap to capture your capital. When an airline cancels your flight, the app instantly offers you a voucher or miles โ because they know most people click accept. But the law is on your side: if the CARRIER cancels or significantly changes your flight, you're entitled to a full CASH refund to your original payment method. In the US that's a federal rule; in the EU (EU261) you may be owed compensation on TOP of the refund. Vouchers expire, get forgotten, and lock you into one airline. Cash doesn't.
Card 2 โ Step 1
๐ซ Step 1: Never accept the first offer in the app. The cancellation email will have a big friendly button: 'Rebook or get travel credit.' Ignore it โ clicking accept on a voucher can WAIVE your refund right. Instead, note three facts: who canceled (them, not you โ this only works if the airline canceled or made a major schedule change), your booking reference, and the fare you paid. If you canceled voluntarily, this lever doesn't apply โ then a voucher may genuinely be the best offer on the table.
Card 3 โ Step 2
๐ Step 2: Get a human and say the magic words. Call, or use the airline's chat, and be calm and specific: 'My flight [number] on [date] was canceled by the airline. Under DOT regulations I'm entitled to a full refund to my original form of payment. I'm declining the voucher and requesting the cash refund.' (EU flights: cite 'EU261'.) If the agent says 'we can only offer credit,' ask politely for a supervisor or say: 'Please note in my file that I requested a refund and was refused.' That sentence changes conversations โ refusing a lawful refund request creates a paper trail nobody wants.
Card 4 โ Step 3
๐ณ Step 3: Escalate on rails if they stall. 1. File the refund request in writing on the airline's site (creates the record; US airlines must process card refunds within 7 business days). 2. Still stonewalled? File a complaint at the Department of Transportation's website (5 minutes; airlines answer DOT complaints fast because each one is tracked). 3. The nuclear option: dispute the charge with your credit card โ 'service canceled by merchant, refund refused' is a textbook winning chargeback. Keep screenshots of the cancellation notice and every reply. Typical timeline once you push properly: money back in 1-3 weeks.
Card 5 โ The Cheat Sheet
๐ The Cash-Refund Cheat Sheet: 1. Airline cancels = cash refund right; voucher acceptance can waive it. 2. Never click the app's first offer. 3. Script: 'Airline-canceled, DOT rules, refund to original payment, declining the voucher.' 4. Refused? 'Please note my file that I was refused' โ supervisor. 5. Escalation ladder: written request โ DOT complaint โ credit card dispute. 6. Screenshots of everything. Their app is built for their balance sheet โ the law is built for yours.
